Founder’s Letter

Welcome to our site!

I say our because it's your home as much as it is mine.

This online magazine was founded by a Jamaican American black woman who grew tired of cultural food narratives being told by outsiders. A Dash of Awkward seeks to provide a safe space for all, in which they can share their experiences with food, culture, and identity. It is built for everyone, and is held up by the narratives that you as readers choose to share with us and the public. We only hope that you, as a reader and potential contributor, feel comfortable enough to speak of your culture, foods, and experiences the way you would want it to be told.

It aims to remove the middleman and allow people to share their experiences with the environment around them. The magazine recognizes that as individuals with varying backgrounds, experiences, and relationships, we will at times have opposing perspectives. I understand that, and encourage A Dash of Awkward to be a place of discourse and discussion.

A Dash of Awkward, however, is not in support of hate language and discrimination- and any form of that will be promptly addressed. This site is for everyone, by everyone- no matter the gender, sexuality, race, nationality, religion, ethnicity, and more. Your desired pronouns will be respected.

This magazine is a place of love. We hope that you will see it as home, just as we do.
